Team Jamaica is off to a Roots rocking start on the road to the annual Penn Relays in Philadelphia this weekend, thanks to Reggae legend Cocoa Tea and his musical brethren who rocked Brooklyn College’s Walt Whitman Theater last Sunday for the ‘Team Jamaica on the Road to Beijing’ Reggae Charity Concert. Presented by Team Jamaica Bickle and VP Records, scores of Reggae fans were treated to the drum and bass sounds of the island, while raising much needed capital to fund Jamaica’s track and field athletes at Penn, and on their journey to dominate the XXIX Summer Olympic Games in Beijing, China this August.

A Celebration of the Lunar New Year was held at York College on Feb. 7th, the first day of the first lunar month in the Chinese Calendar and ends on the 15th day. The Chinese year 4706 began on Feb. 7th. President Marcia Keizs called it a celebration of Renewal. This is the year of the rat, a time of change, of looking for-ward at what the next 12 years will bring. Chinese New Year is the most important of the traditional Chinese holidays. There were performances of the Lion Dance by the Dragon Style Kung Fu Company of Chinatown, their second year perform-ing at York.

New York City Council Member Leroy Comrie (center), joined by Council Member Oliver Koppell (3rd right), Assemblywoman Audrey Pheffer (2nd right) and numerous senior advocates at a City Hall press conference on Friday, February 22 to call upon the Department For The Aging (DFTA) to slow-down the implementation of a new modernization proposal for citywide senior citizen centers and to consider a new course of action that would avoid cuts to the senior services budget, the closing of senior centers and re-examine the regionalization of services.
