The legendary guitarist was driving on US Highway 98 around 8:30AM when he attempted to make a U-turn in front of a Greyhound bus, according the Florida Highway Patrol. The bus hit Kirkland’s Ford Taurus on the right side and pushed the car an estimated 200 yards before both vehicles stopped. Kirkland was flown to Tampa General Hospital where he later died. The bus driver and 13 passengers on the Greyhound were not injured.

Exactly two years to the date, Kartel has come under fire once again from another outraged Jamaican, this time for bleaching his skin. In a statement from 2010 broadcaster of the Year, Dubb Master Chris of New York based Irie Jam radio said, “I am disgusted  by Kartel’s decisions to bleach his skin complexion and for that I will not play any of his music for Black History Month this year. Black History Month is a big deal and we as a people should take every opportunity to celebrate our heritage. I feel if I continue to play Vybez Kartel, an artist who is now very much known for bleaching his skin, it simply sends the wrong message to my young impressionable listeners,” he said.

Chris’ decision to ban songs by Kartel on his radio program for Black History Month is a personal decision he made on February 1 that is backed by the management of Irie Jam Radio, the station he has worked with for the past 16 years.

“I endorse and fully support the decision by Dubb Master Chris to ban songs from Kartel for Black History Month,” Bobby Clarke CEO of Irie Jam Radio said. “What Kartel has done in his action is to dishonor and disrespect the struggles and accomplishments of black patriarchs like Malcolm X, Marcus Garvey and Martin Luther King. While we love and respect his talent and music, this aspect of his personality is cause for concern, as it has the potential to lead our kids astray,” he reasoned.

The  American  Foundation  for the  University  of  the  West Indies  (AFUWI)  is  pleased  to announce  that  Suzanne  de  Passe, Co-Chair  of  de  Passe  Jones Entertainment,  will  be  the  first female  to  be  awarded  the  presti- gious AFUWI Bob Marley Award at the 14th Annual Legacy Awards Gala  on Wednesday,  January  26, 2011 in New York City.



The AFUWI Legacy Awards Gala is a prestigious annual event which  seeks  to  raise well-needed funds  to  support  scholarship  pro- grams  at  the  University  of  the West Indies (UWI) and  is  its premier  fundraising  event  in  the United States.

The Bob Marley Award  is  a recognition granted to individuals whose contribution  to  the advancement  of  arts  and  culture transcends  boundaries  of  race, color, creed and geographies, uniting people throughout the world in a spirit  that embodies  the essence of the music and lyrics of the Hon.

Robert Nesta Marley, OM.  Suzanne  de  Passe  began  her career with Motown,  discovering Michael Jackson and The Jackson 5,  Lionel  Richie  and  the Commodores, and numerous other multi-million  selling  artists.

Currently, Suzanne along with her business  partner, Madison  Jones, are  producing  with  Steven Spielberg,  the  definitive  motion picture  on  the  life  of  Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. for DreamWorks.

The police said an unidentified gunman shot and killed Dwayne Haughton, 29, during the early hours of Saturday morning in the Richmond Hill section of Queens.

Houghton, who carried the stage name ‘Bobby Genius’, was walking a friend to her car after she got into an argument with another woman, police and eyewitnesses said.

The police said they found Haughton bleeding from neck and chest wounds, and died a short time later at Jamaica Medical Centre in Queens.

Haughton had come to the party to pick up his girlfriend, Kadian Allen, when he saw a female friend get into a scuffle with another woman.

“I heard gunshots,” Allen said, adding “when I ran out of the car, he was just laying there on his back, just laying there not moving.
